TOPmed Philosophy

The path to medicine is hard. But we don't care. We will hold lives in our hands one day. That's an insane amount of responsibility and trust, and we intend to earn it.

But… hard and broken aren't the same thing. The brokenness is rooted in the hidden rules and requirements. In the lessons we only learn after doing "something," and that "something" is permanent. The brokenness is in the lack of structure. Thousands of pre-meds are trying to figure out how to track their GPA or their hours right now. Thousands more are wondering how to build a plan at all.

There are two responses to the pressure. Quit, or become cutthroat. But we don't care. The goal was never an easier path, nor hurting others to get what we want. The goal is to serve people, and not step on others to get what we want. And we want the tools to help us get there; to plan simple, execute well, and succeed.

There are thousands of distractions. But we don't care. We are the determined. We're the ones willing to do the work and put the hours in, because we know the grind is the price for holding a human life in our hands. It's not for the weak.

There are thousands of excuses. But we don't care. We know the enemy is the excuse, not the people around us. Cutthroat isn't acceptable. We take charge, we do the work, and we stop waiting on permission from people who were never going to do it themselves.

That's who we are.

TOPmed Story

The story of TOPmed.

For four years, the same problems kept surfacing for me, and for everyone around me. How do you track a GPA across years and systems that each count it differently? How do you log hours in an efficient and simple way? How do you know what to do when you just start? These small annoyances are what hurt many pre-meds on their journey.

I looked for tools and tried what was out there. But the tools on the market are clunky, outdated, and harder to use and understand than organic chemistry. These tools were either built with very little focus on design and usability or a long time ago.

At one point I gave up on trying to find something and decided to make it. I have a background in coding. I started tinkering in December of 2025, kept building through the end of undergrad, and launched in June of 2026.

So I built Journey by TOPmed with my freshman, sophomore, and junior self and you in mind.

And that's the whole promise of TOPmed. Beautiful software built by one of us, for the rest of us. It's hard! But we don't care!

Founder's Note

S

From our founder…

I was a pre-med for four years. I started college in August of 2022 and I'm starting medical school in 2026. During undergrad I studied neuroscience, philosophy, and political science. I followed the pre-med path and found lots of unnecessary headaches that I wish were solved.

My philosophy is simply to provide the most amount of value for the most amount of people. I believe in Jesus and adopt the belief that we are here to love and serve, and how you treat people is the whole measure of a life. It's why I do what I do!
