Three applications. Three different GPAs.

MD, DO, and podiatry applications each recalculate your transcript with their own rules. The biggest difference: what counts as “science.”

AMCAS

MD programs

Science (BCPM) GPA includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math. Every attempt of every course counts.

AACOMAS

DO programs

Science GPA covers Biology, Chemistry, and Physics only. Math counts as non-science. All attempts included.

AACPMAS

Podiatry (DPM) programs

Science GPA covers Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Math is grouped with all other coursework.

The grade scale

All three services convert letter grades to a 4.0 scale. Grade points are multiplied by credit hours, summed, and divided by total graded credits.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my science GPA different between AMCAS and AACOMAS?

AMCAS counts Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math in the science (BCPM) GPA. AACOMAS and AACPMAS count only Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Math courses move to the non-science GPA, so the same transcript can produce different science GPAs depending on where you apply.

How do Pass/Fail, Withdrawn, and AP credits affect my GPA?

Passed Pass/Fail courses and AP credits earn credit hours but are excluded from GPA calculation. Withdrawals, audits, and incompletes carry no credits and no GPA effect. A failed Pass/Fail course (NP) counts as 0.0 grade points.

Do repeated courses count toward my GPA?

For AMCAS and AACOMAS, every attempt of a repeated course is included in your GPA. Neither service replaces grades. Policies can change, so always verify against the current application instructions for your cycle.

What GPA do I need for medical school?

Recent MD matriculants average around a 3.7–3.8 overall GPA, and DO matriculants around a 3.5–3.6. Schools read GPA in context, trend matters, and a strong upward trajectory can offset a slow start.
